Gold Standard–The Oscars Podcast Guest Appearance

Today my new blog series Looking Back on 2024 debuts! Life moves pretty fast. I’m going to stop and look back on my past year and share its film experiences not yet logged on the blog. First up is my Gold Standard–The Oscars Podcast guest appearance!

In May of 2024, DJ Nik from the Gold Standard–The Oscars Podcast contacted me about making a guest appearance. He, co-hosts Rachel and Xan Sprouse, and usually a guest review in-depth “every Best Picture winning movie in chronological order and beyond.” DJ Nik wanted to book me to discuss a silent film, and we settled on METROPOLIS (1927).

When we recorded in August, Rachel wasn’t able to join us. I had a blast chatting about the film with DJ Nik and Xan. They came prepared to carry on a marathon length dissection of the movie. As a guest, I found them respectful of and highly interested in everyone’s opinions and interpretations. The show’s format ensured all got to speak. In advance of the recording, DJ Nik sent me the order of the discussion’s key topics. We each took turns delving into them.

It was a lot of fun to speak unfettered about a movie with fellow film fanatics! As a stay-at-home Mom of a toddler, I’m not able to travel for film festivals currently. They’re where I’d usually gab about movies outside of the Spellbound with Beth Ann podcast. As I warmed up during the show, I shared more. My conversational contributions include robotic self-awareness, Rotwang as an incel, spite houses, and whether I would have awarded METROPOLIS an Academy Award.
