Fashion Friday: When a Rose Isn’t Simply a Rose

Margot Robbie not only showed up in classic movie star style at the MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS London premiere, but also she exhibited one’s savvy about the impact of red carpet style as costume. She wore a Rodarte frock, a brand known for its frippery, yet her selection was relatively subtle except for one important applique–a cluster of red roses.  The flowers visually tie her into the film’s title behind her, almost like they’re its punctuation. Her bright red lips and rosy eyeshadows make her face pop more than Saoirse Ronan‘s natural look and again link Robbie to the movie’s title. Even though she doesn’t play the title character, no one will doubt she’s a leading lady. An excellent tactic for someone playing Queen Elizabeth I. Robbie needs to be bold in the role because she’s following in the footsteps of heavy hitters Bette Davis, Glenda Jackson, and Cate Blanchett to whom she will be compared.
